Cardiovascular Services

Our team of professionals are here to provide services to those who have been diagnosed with cardiovascular diseases and conditions that affect the heart and blood vessels. These may include arteriosclerosis, heart disease, shock, endocarditis, heart valve disease, coronary artery disease, hypertension, diseases of the aorta and its branches, disorders of the peripheral vascular system, and congenital heart disease.

Thoracic Surgery

Our Thoracic Surgery program is one of the best in the country. We provide expert care with state-of-the-art technology, all in a welcoming and comfortable environment. Our dedicated team, led by Timothy Sherwood, MD, provides multidisciplinary treatment and support. If you've been diagnosed with a disease or condition that affects your lungs or chest, our treatment team will provide services from diagnosis to discharge.

Our Providers

John Cardone, MD

John Cardone, MD, specializes in cardiac and thoracic surgery. He earned his medical degree at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, then completed surgical and thoracic surgery residencies at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick, New Jersey, and Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, respectively. He’s certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, and is a Fellow of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and the American College of Surgeons.

Education and Experience

Alex Na, MD

Medical Director of Cardiovascular Surgery

Dr. Alex Sang Ho Na brings a level of clinical expertise that is unmatched in our region. A board-certified, fellowship trained cardiothoracic surgeon, Dr. Na specializes in minimally invasive valve surgery, high risk coronary artery bypass surgery, complex aortic surgery, MAZE procedures for atrial fibrillation, mitral valve repairs, and blood conservation cardiac surgery. Dr. Na has performed more than 3,500 procedures involving congenital and acquired adult cardiovascular disease.

J. Timothy Sherwood, MD

J. Timothy Sherwood, MD, is a highly trained and experienced thoracic surgeon specializing in lung and esophageal cancer. He has developed one of the top thoracic programs in the country, performing over 500 cases in 2018, The Lung Cancer Surgery Program was ranked “high performing” by U.S. News & World Report in 2018.

Education and Experience

Emily Barnes, NP-C

Emily Barnes, NP-C was born and raised in Fredericksburg, Virginia. She is board certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners as a Family Nurse Practitioner. She received a Bachelor of Science in health studies from James Madison University in 2012 and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Northeastern University in 2014.

Emily developed a particular interest in Cardiothoracic Surgery after taking care of patients recovering from various open heart procedures during her final semester at Northeastern. She worked on the surgical intermediate care unit at Mary Washington Hospital for three years while completing her Master of Science in Nursing from Maryville University. She enjoys the opportunity to provide personalized care to patients and their families as they prepare for and recover from surgery.

When she’s not at work, Emily can be found spending time with her husband and dog. She enjoys exercising, reading, live music, attending professional sporting events, and traveling.


Lisa Keel, NP

Jenna Kollat, PA-C, MPAS

Jenna Kollat, PA-C, MPAS was born and raised in Aurora, Ohio. She is board certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants. She was accepted into the 5-year Physician Assistant program at Gannon University in Erie, PA where she received a Bachelor of Science in health science in 2015 and then going on to receive a Master of Physician Assistant Studies at Gannon University in 2017. She then completed a 1-year Postgraduate Surgical Residency program for Physician Assistants at Johns Hopkins Hospital in 2018.

Jenna developed a passion for thoracic surgery during her postgraduate training at Johns Hopkins Hospital. She enjoys the opportunity to provide care to the patients and their families in the pre-operative setting, operative setting as well as the post-operative setting. She is honored to work with Dr. Sherwood and the thoracic team here at Mary Washington Hospital and truly loves to be able to first assist with the surgical procedures in the operating room.

When she is not at work, she can be found running, rock climbing, spending time with her two pets and doing anything that involves being outdoors.

Stephanie Strazinsky, PA-C

Stephanie Strazinsky PA-C, is board certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants Physician. She graduated from Saint Francis University with a Bachelor of Science in Physician Assistant Studies in 1982. Since graduation she has worked in all aspects of General and Cardiac Surgery, including the operating room.

Stephanie moved to Fredericksburg from Pittsburgh in 1994 to help build the Cardiac Surgery program at Mary Washington Hospital. She is happy to see the program thrive over the years. Her free time is spent with her daughter, quirky dog, and writing the next Great American novel.

Vicki Wallace, CRNP

Vicki Wallace, CRNP, is board certified by the American Nurse Credentialing Center as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner. She received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Salisbury State University in 1998 and her Master of Science in Nursing in 2002 from University of Maryland at Baltimore. Vicki joined Mary Washington Hospital in 2005. She previously worked with the Cardiothoracic Surgery team at Washington Hospital Center for 7 years as a registered nurse and nurse practitioner. Vicki plays an active role in the development and growth of the Cardiothoracic Surgery program.

She enjoys watching her children play sports and spending time with her family.

Sarah Vitaletti, NP-C

Structural Heart Coordinator

Sarah Vitaletti, NP-C is board certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners as an Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner. She is the Structural Heart Coordinator, and helped develop and implement the TAVR program at Mary Washington Hospital. Sarah provides individualized care for patients with structural heart and valvular disease. She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Virginia Commonwealth University. Sarah worked in the surgical intensive care unit caring for cardiothoracic surgery patients at Mary Washington Hospital for 13 years before earning her Master of Science in Nursing from Walden University in 2015. Sarah enjoys the opportunity to offer new technologies and cardiovascular care to patients in the Fredericksburg area.

In her spare time, she enjoys traveling and spending time with her family.
