Sports Medicine

FootballSports medicine is a branch of medicine that deals with physical fitness and the treatment and prevention of injuries related to sports and exercise. At Mary Washington Orthopedics in affiliation with FOA, our sports medicine specialists have extensive education in musculoskeletal medicine. Sports medicine doctors treat injuries such as muscle, ligament, tendon and bone problems, but may also treat chronic illnesses that can affect physical performance, such as asthma and diabetes.

The various sports medicine experts often work together as a team to ensure the best recovery plan for the individual. Team members can include orthopedic surgeons, certified athletic trainers, physical therapists, physical medicine and rehabilitation specialists, as well as specialty sports medicine physicians.

Cartilage Restoration

Dr. Christopher Richards is a highly trained specialist in a cartilage restoration process known as the MACI procedure. In this two-part process, a sample of your cartilage cells is extracted from your joint and sent to a laboratory and embedded on a special collagen membrane which your doctor then implants into your knee. The cartilage cells regenerate, forming a repair tissue that can fill the cartilage defect. Following the MACI procedure, your knee will be immobilized and you will follow a physician-prescribed rehabilitation program specially designed for you.
