Mary Washington Hospice Recognized for its Work with Veterans
Americans celebrate Veterans Day every year on November 11, but honoring
the nation’s veterans includes supporting them throughout their
entire lives, especially at the end of life.
In 2016, Mary Washington Hospice achieved Level II status from “We
Honor Veterans,” an innovative campaign that works to ensure that
veterans who enter hospice receive the end-of-life care and services they
deserve. We Honor Veterans partners must demonstrate their ability to
recognize the unique needs of America’s veterans and their families
as well as learn how to accompany and guide them through their life stories
to a more peaceful ending. The campaign was developed by the National
Hospice and Palliative Care Organization in collaboration with the U.S.
Department of Veterans Affairs.
Level II status indicates that Mary Washington Hospice has complied with
specified activities which include: conducting staff, volunteer and community
education programs; integrating the military history checklist process
into referral or intake procedures; and developing ongoing relationships
with a designated Veterans Affairs contact person.
On November 11, 2016, Mary Washington Hospice held Veteran Pinning Ceremonies
for nearly 300 local veterans at 20 assisted-living and senior-care facilities
in the Fredericksburg area.
