Battling Cancer 5K
At the age of 17, Kyle Pfohl, wanted to do something in honor of his mother,
Annette Pfohl, a seven-time breast cancer survivor since 2005. Kyle wanted
to raise money for the treatment of cancer patients in the Fredericksburg
community. Through a partnership with Mary Washington Hospital Foundation,
Kyle’s vision was born. The first Battling Cancer 5k Run/Walk was
held on Father’s Day in 2012 and has occurred annually with great
success since then.
The 2015 race took place on June 21 with over four hundred twenty participants
coming out to show their support! The race started and finished at the
Carl D. Silver Health Center/Moss Free Clinic’s parking lot near
the Mary Washington Healthcare Regional Cancer Center. Mary Washington
Foundation works as the development entity that supports MWHC Regional
Cancer Center and raises funds that work to provide excellent care to
persons who are fighting the battle against cancer. Dr. Charles Maurer
of Hematology Oncology Associates of Fredericksburg served as Presenting
Sponsor, and other sponsors, donors and friends of the community came
out to support the event raising $22,000 to benefit cancer patients who
secure services at the Mary Washington Healthcare Regional Cancer Center.
