Dr. William Anderson was a General Internist and served as Medical Director
for a number of long-term care facilities in Richmond for 22 years before
becoming board-certified in Hospice and Palliative Medicine in 2012. He
is also one of 16 Certified Hospice Medical Directors in Virginia. He
became Medical Director of Hospice and Palliative Care Services at Mary
Washington Healthcare in 2016.
Dr. Anderson began the journey toward his current career when caring for
his parents at the end of their lives over 25 years ago, though he did
not know it at the time. He knew only that there was something missing
in the healthcare system, something he had not been taught in medical
school. The missing piece turned out to be a model of care in which patients
and their families were the experts, and always treated respectfully and
compassionately as whole and unique persons. Since 2012, he has had the
good fortune of working with many gifted nurses, CNAs, social workers,
chaplains, community liaisons and volunteers in delivering this special
kind of care.
