Fredericksburg, VA — (July 23, 2026) — Mary Washington Healthcare (MWHC) and Medical Center Radiologists (MCR) today announced a new affiliation that will strengthen and unify radiology services across the region, ensuring continued access to high-quality, reliable care.
Beginning February 1, 2027, MCR will provide comprehensive inpatient and outpatient imaging services across Mary Washington Healthcare. This collaboration reflects a shared commitment to clinical excellence, patient access, and long-term stability in radiology services.
There will be no disruption of imaging services during this transition, including mammography and women’s health services. Patients currently receiving care at any outpatient Mary Washington Medical Imaging facility or as an inpatient at Mary Washington Hospital or Stafford Hospital will continue to receive the same high-quality care across all locations throughout the Mary Washington Healthcare system.
Similarly, there will be no disruption to staffing for outpatient or inpatient imaging services. Staff members at these locations are employees of Mary Washington Healthcare and that will not change.
“This affiliation reflects a deliberate, long-term strategy to strengthen radiology services and ensure stability and continuity of care for patients across the region. It is an important step forward for Mary Washington Healthcare and the patients and families served every day,” said Christopher Newman, MD, MWHC President and CEO. “Medical Center Radiologists brings decades of experience and a strong reputation for quality. Together, we will ensure continued access to the high standard of imaging care the community expects.”
Medical Center Radiologists is the oldest and one of the largest radiology groups in Virginia, with more than 70 years of experience serving patients across the commonwealth. With more than 90 radiologists and physician assistants, including fellowship-trained subspecialists across nine imaging areas, MCR is the only hybrid academic-private group in the commonwealth, serving as the primary radiology practice for Eastern Virginia Medical School at Old Dominion University.
“MCR is proud to partner with Mary Washington Healthcare,” said Robert Post, M.D., MCR president. “This new relationship allows both organizations to build on a shared commitment to patient care, quality, and access, while preparing for the future needs of the region.”
MCR has a long history of participating in medical school education, residency training, and fellowship training. MWHC and MCR are excited to work together on the proposed new medical school, working with existing and new residencies and fellowships, as well as initiating new radiology training. The affiliation seeks to create an environment that not only provides high-quality care but also builds a sustainable environment for physicians to train and create practices in the community. This effort will support the long-term availability of highly trained specialists and strengthen access to care across the Fredericksburg region.
Patients will continue to schedule and receive imaging services as they do today, with no immediate changes to appointments, locations, or processes. The transition to MCR will be carefully coordinated to ensure a consistent and reliable patient experience.
“This affiliation establishes a strong foundation for the future of imaging services at Mary Washington Healthcare, with a focus on quality, access, and meeting the evolving needs of patients and providers across the region,” Dr. Newman said.
Additional information will be shared as the transition approaches.
