Fredericksburg, Va. (August 17, 2026) – The Women’s and Children’s Care Center at Mary Washington Hospital recently welcomed 51 babies in a single week, including four sets of twins, making it one of the busiest weeks for deliveries in the hospital's recent history.
The week stood out not only for the number of births but also for the number of multiple births. For Ann Weed, director of Women's Services at Mary Washington Hospital, the week was unlike any she has experienced during her tenure.
"In my 28 years at Mary Washington Hospital, I've never seen this many multiple births in a single week and on the unit at the same time," Weed said. "It was a busy week, but our team remained focused on providing safe, high-quality care for every mother and baby. We're honored that so many families trusted us with such an important moment in their lives."
While most newborns transition successfully to routine care, having neonatal specialists and a Level III NICU available provides an added layer of support for families welcoming premature infants, multiples, or babies who require specialized care after birth.
"Caring for so many mothers and babies requires extraordinary teamwork across our Labor & Delivery, Mother-Baby and NICU teams," said Nancy Young, Nurse Manager, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Mary Washington Hospital. "Our nurses and caregivers are specially trained to care for newborns with a wide range of needs, and we're proud to provide families with expert, compassionate care from the moment their babies arrive. Weeks like this highlight both the dedication of our staff and the trust families place in us during one of life's most important moments."
The Women’s and Children’s Care team includes obstetric nurses, physicians, midwives, neonatal specialists and support staff who provide care for mothers and newborns across the Fredericksburg region. Through Mary Washington Healthcare's partnership with Children's National Hospital, families also have access to advanced pediatric and neonatal expertise close to home.
