Medical Student/Graduate Observership

  • What is a medical student/graduate observership?

An observership provides valuable opportunities for medical students or graduates to gain insight into clinical practice under the guidance of an approved preceptor. These experiences typically involve observing various aspects of patient care and medical procedures without engaging in any hands-on activities or direct patient care responsibilities. It's crucial to note that observerships are strictly observational and have a maximum duration of twenty hours per experience. This format ensures that participants can learn from experienced professionals while respecting patient privacy and safety.
  • Who are our observers?

    M1, M2, medical school graduates
    • Any other person/student will go through Career Development
    • Must demonstrate that they are in good standing as a current medical student or as a graduate from medical school

APP Clinical Placement Requests

An APP clinical placement is a supervised, real-world clinical experience for an Advanced Practice Provider (APP) student, such as a nurse practitioner (NP) or physician assistant (PA). The learner applies what they’ve learned in the classroom of a healthcare-related program of study at an accredited educational institution in a healthcare setting like a hospital, clinic, or practice. Clinical placements are a required part of APP education and are done under the guidance of experienced clinicians, allowing students to build hands-on skills, clinical judgment, and professional confidence as part of their training.

Things to keep in mind:

  • An affiliation agreement between MWHC and the school must be in place prior to the student starting the learning experience.
  • There is an extensive onboarding process to include health screenings, a background check, and several HR compliance forms.
  • Submitting a request does not guarantee placement for a clinical rotation.

To request an APP clinical placement at Mary Washington Healthcare (APP learners/students):

All APP placement requests must be sent to the Medical Student Coordinator at medicalstudenteducation@mwhc.com.
Let us know if a provider has agreed to precept you. Requests are matched in the order received; we may not be able to place every learner with their first choice or at all.

We ensure placements don’t conflict with other learners, including residents and medical students. If approved, we’ll confirm with both learner and provider and begin onboarding.

Providers, if you receive an outside request for APP clinical placement (APP providers):

Ask the APP learner to contact the Medical Education Coordinator directly or respond with the medical student education email address in your reply. Please do not guarantee a clinical placement with you as we cannot guarantee placement but will try our best to match.

Thank you for choosing MWHC for your clinical experience!

For more information on these exciting opportunities and rotations, please contact the Medical Education Coordinator at medicalstudenteducation@mwhc.com.
