At Mary Washington Healthcare, we know that understanding the price of
your medical care can make it easier to plan for health care expenses;
however, it can also prove to be quite complicated. We would like to make
this process easier by offering tools and resources that provide access
to this information. First, let’s start off with the “what”
and “how” of price estimates.
What is a price estimate?
A price estimate is an estimate of the patient’s out of pocket responsibility
based on the procedure, the type of insurance, and the average allowable
amount for the procedure (without complications). It is important to note
that the estimate is for informational purposes only and it not a guarantee
of coverage/payment. For specific information regarding your insurance
benefits, including but not limited to your coverage level, covered services,
contracted status, policy exclusions, or maximum benefits, please contact
your insurance company.
How can I request an estimate for a specific procedure?
If you need an estimate for a specific procedure or operation, contact

You can also visit the Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association’s
website to use their
PricePoint tool to compare inpatient hospital pricing.
In addition to the above, and in compliance with the Centers for Medicare
and Medicaid Services’ Price Transparency requirement, Mary Washington
Healthcare has made available a comprehensive list of its hospital charges*.
This list includes charges for Mary Washington and Stafford Hospitals.
Please note this information represents the hospital’s standard
charges and not what you will pay.
Actual charges and out of pocket costs will vary by patient and will be
dependent on services provided and insurance coverage. You can talk to
your insurance company or call a financial counselor at Mary Washington
Healthcare to determine your specific out-of-pocket costs. If you do not
have health insurance, there are financial assistance options that are
available. Visit our
financial assistance page or call a financial counselor to discuss these options.

How can I use this hospital charge information for comparing prices?
Charge information is not necessarily useful for consumers who may be comparison-shopping
between hospitals. The descriptions for a service often vary from one
hospital to another and what is included in that description may vary.
It is difficult to try to independently compare the charges for a procedure
at one location versus another. Because procedures include numerous other
components such as laboratory, imaging, pharmaceuticals, and more, one
hospital’s charges may not reflect all those costs while another
hospital’s charges might include them. In addition, the charges
do not reflect the actual out of pocket cost amounts owed by insured or
*The charges referenced above do not include the professional services
provided by a physician during your visit. You will receive separate bills
for most physician services conducted in the hospital.
