Mary Washington Healthcare Announces New Anesthesiology Residency at Mary Washington Hospital

Fredericksburg, VA, (May 29, 2024) – Mary Washington Healthcare (MWHC) is proud to announce the approval of its new anesthesiology residency program at Mary Washington Hospital (MWH). The program, part of MWHC's Graduate Medical Program (GME), is set to commence in July 2025, with an inaugural class of six residents. This residency program will be the third of its kind in Virginia and will offer categorical residency, collaborating with the medicine and surgery departments to establish a clinical base year. Core anesthesia rotations will commence during the second year of the anesthesiology residency.

"We are excited to welcome physician learners into our department,” says Ruth Neary, MD, Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology, Mary Washington Healthcare. “We have plans to work collaboratively with all the perioperative leaders and ancillary areas where we currently provide anesthesia services to ensure the new residents are integrated seamlessly. Our hope is that the new residency will bring more anesthesiologists to the state of Virginia, and further the academic learning environment for all learners and staff in the perioperative areas at Mary Washington Healthcare."

Jeffrey Green, MD, an esteemed academic physician, will be joining the Department of Anesthesiology at Mary Washington Healthcare as the Academic Chair and Program Director. Dr. Green spent more than 20 years in academics at VCU Health and is currently Director for Virginia to the American Society of Anesthesiologists Board of Directors, and past president of the Virginia Society of Anesthesiologists.

Additionally, Paul Ware, MD, a long-established physician within the organization, has signed on as the Assistant Program Director. Dr. Ware, who recently concluded his tenure as the chair of the American Board of Anesthesiology's advanced exam committee, brings valuable knowledge and expertise to the team.

MWHC began their GME program in July 2022. Internal Medicine and Family Medicine residencies began in 2023, with residents in general surgery and transitional year programs set to start in July of 2024. All programs have completely filled through the Electronic Residency Application Service process.
