Mary Washington Healthcare Regional Cancer Center Earns Novalis Radiotherapy Certification

Fredericksburg, VA, December 21, 2021 – The Mary Washington Healthcare (MWHC) Regional Cancer Center has been recertified as a Novalis® Certified Cancer Center after a rigorous evaluation process conducted by an independent, third-party panel of experts in radiation therapy.

This recertification means the radiosurgery program at the MWHC Regional Cancer Center continues to meet or exceed quality and patient safety standards as verified by an independent group of experts. Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS) and Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) use high doses of radiation to destroy cancer. The techniques are often used to treat cancer in the brain and lungs. Unlike conventional radiation, fewer treatment doses are needed. Targeted tumors are destroyed to the point where the results can be compared with surgery—without the trauma of cutting through a healthy brain or other structures to reach the tumor.

“We are very proud of our team, which remains committed to continuous quality improvement and to a culture of safety,” says Renee Shank, Director, Radiation Oncology, MWHC Regional Cancer Center. “Renewal of our Novalis Certified status demonstrates a commitment to excellence at the highest levels of healthcare as we continue to advance our programs in a systematic and pragmatic way, most recently with the implementation of a prostate SBRT program.”

A comprehensive review was conducted including quality, safety, clinical workflow, and the full continuum of care across clinical, support, and administrative levels. The MWHC Regional Cancer Center is included in a prestigious community of hospitals nationwide that have demonstrated the requisite clinical capabilities and standards for treatment delivery.
