I was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. I completed medical school at the University of Buenos Aires. After graduation, I completed both my Internal Medicine and Cardiology fellowships in Buenos Aires. I was then selected to be a Research Fellow in the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, where I dedicated three years to basic science research on vascular injury following coronary interventions. I was very fortunate to be mentored by one of the greatest leaders in cardiovascular medicine, Dr. Eric Topol. Following my research training, I completed additional clinical training in Cardiology and subsequently an Interventional Cardiology Fellowship at the same institution.
Over the next two decades, I dedicated myself to the practice of Cardiovascular Medicine and Interventional Cardiology. During my time at the University of Florida College of Medicine – Jacksonville, I was instrumental in developing multiple programs, including those focused on high-risk coronary interventions, peripheral vascular disease, and structural heart disease interventions. I served as the Interventional Cardiology Program Director and advanced through academic ranks from Assistant Professor to Full Professor of Medicine.
For 12 years, I was actively involved in fellow education as core faculty in both the Cardiovascular Medicine and Interventional Cardiology fellowship programs at the University of Florida, where I was honored to receive the “Teacher of the Year” award multiple times. In 2015, I moved to Virginia to join Virginia Commonwealth University as the Interventional Cardiology Program Director and Interventional Cardiology Fellowship Program Director continuing with my involvement in education and academic medicine.
I was drawn to Mary Washington Healthcare by the opportunity to help build a new educational program from the ground up and to help shape the future of cardiovascular medicine within the healthcare system. When I’m not at work, I enjoy spending time with my family, traveling, exploring new restaurants, and playing sports.

Internal Medicine Residency: University of Pittsburgh Medical Center
Cardiology Fellowship: University of Pittsburgh Medical Center
Career Interest: My clinical cardiology interest focuses on preventive cardiology, cardiovascular
imaging and management of lipid disorders. My research work includes cardiovascular
risk factors, differences in cardiovascular outcomes, synthesis of clinical
evidence, and HIV-associated cardiovascular disease. I have used several
databases for my research including the Veteran Health Administration data.
I am a staff physician and director of research in the cardiology division at Mary Washington Hospital. I am also an adjunct Associate Professor of Medicine at Brown University and research investigator at Providence VA Medical Center.
Prior to joining Mary Washington Hospital, I was a staff cardiologist at Providence VA Medical Center, Rhode Island Hospital and the Miriam Hospital, and Assistant Professor Medicine at Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University for 6 years (Providence, RI). Originally from Ethiopia, I completed medical school at Gondar College of Medical Sciences (Gondar, Ethiopia) in 2004. I then earned a Masters (2006) and a PhD (2010) in Epidemiology at the University of Cambridge in the UK. I completed my internal medicine residency (2013) and general cardiology training (2018) at the University of Pittsburgh (Pittsburgh, PA). I have published over 100 manuscripts in peer reviewed journals including in Journal of the American medical Association (JAMA), JAMA-Cardiology, and Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC). My work has been previously funded by governmental and non-governmental research grants.
I have provided mentorship for medical students, residents and cardiology fellows in my career, many of whom have presented their research work at national and international conferences and published in peer-reviewed journals. Several of my mentees have maintained their interest in cardiovascular disease and proceeded to become cardiology fellows. In 2024, I was selected for the Beckwith Family Award for Outstanding Teaching, which is the highest teaching award given by the Department of Medicine of Brown University.
