Surgical Weight Loss & Bariatric Services

MBSAQIP sealSurgical weight loss, also known as bariatric surgery, is a great step to a healthier life. In partnership with your physician, counselors, nutritionists and exercise professionals, the surgical team at Mary Washington Healthcare will guide and support you through a transformation that can dramatically improve your life.

Bariatric surgery is not a cure. It’s a tool that’s part of a long-term, lifelong change. Used in combination with other services, it can help you get moving toward an active, healthy lifestyle.

Studies have shown that weight loss surgery can help you resolve or improve leading causes of heart disease including:

  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Abnormalities in lipids
  • Obstructive sleep apnea

Mary Washington Hospital’s surgical weight loss program is accredited by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP). Read more here.

During your weight loss journey, you will work with professionals who can help you with:

  • Nutrition
  • Exercise
  • Behavioral modifications/addictions
  • Long term support for continued weight loss and maintenance

Minimally Invasive Weight Loss Surgery Services:

Laparoscopic Bariatric Surgery is an innovative option and is referred to as minimally invasive surgery. It has replaced most traditional open surgeries. In this method of weight loss surgery, small, ½ inch incisions are made to insert surgical instruments and a telescope (laparoscope), which is connected to a video camera. This telescopic system maintains an enhanced visual field and allows the operation to be viewed on a video monitor while the surgery is performed.

At Mary Washington Healthcare, bariatric surgeons typically use minimally invasive, laparoscopic, endoscopic and robotic-assisted weight loss procedures using the Da Vinci Xi surgical robot. Laparoscopic bariatric surgery requires a high level of skill to be performed properly and safely. These procedures are technically advanced and complex, requiring surgeons to obtain extensive specialty training. When performed by experienced specialists, laparoscopic bariatric surgery is a safe treatment option and offers definite advantages to patients.
