Mary Washington Healthcare welcomes 55 new residents and fellows to its Graduate Medical Education program

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (August 3, 2026) – Mary Washington Healthcare is proud to welcome an incoming class of 55 new physician residents and fellows to its Graduate Medical Education program, bringing the physician training program to more than 100 physicians.

After launching three years ago, Mary Washington Healthcare graduated its first class of practicing physicians this past June. Of the 21 physician residents who completed training, half have chosen to continue practicing in this community. Additionally, MWHC graduated its first family medicine obstetrics fellow. As the Graduate Medical Education program continues to grow, that impact is expected to increase.

“This community was an important part of my training as a physician,” said Lucas Hastings, MD, a 2026 graduate of Mary Washington Healthcare’s Family Medicine Residency Program. “I developed meaningful connections that made Fredericksburg feel like home. That sense of partnership and trust inspired me to stay, continue caring for patients, and help train future physicians who will serve this community for years to come.”

Hastings will now serve in a faculty role, training other family medicine resident physicians.

Mary Washington Healthcare’s Graduate Medical Education program trains residents in internal medicine, family medicine, general surgery and anesthesiology as well as transitional year residents who go on to enter advanced training in other specialties. The program also prioritizes training physicians in other medical specialties of high need in the community, including fellowships in family medicine obstetrics, cardiovascular disease and gastroenterology.

Mary Washington Healthcare will further expand training opportunities in 2027 with the addition of neurology and psychiatry residency programs, and advanced medical training in a pulmonary and critical care medicine fellowship.
