Mary Washington Healthcare Named Top Employer for Interns by State Council of Higher Education for Virginia

Fredericksburg, VA – August 15, 2022 – Mary Washington Healthcare (MWHC) was recently recognized by The Virginia Talent + Opportunity Partnership (V-TOP), in collaboration with the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) and the Virginia Chamber of Commerce as one of the inaugural 2022 Top Virginia Employers for Interns Awards.

The Top Employers for Interns Awards mark one of several ways the Commonwealth acknowledges the inaugural Virginia Intern Day (VID) whereby employers, higher education, and student interns are recognized for their participation in work-based learning opportunities. Governor Glenn Youngkin signed a proclamation recognizing Virginia Intern Day on July 28, 2022, aligning with National Intern Day which occurs annually on the last Thursday of July. Recipients represent small and large employers from across the Commonwealth.

“We are more than honored to receive this award,” says Kathy Wall, MWHC’s Chief Human Resources Officer. “MWHC offers students a variety of learning opportunities and supports them in their educational and medical career journeys.” She continues to say, “One aspect that sets MWHC’s internship apart from others is that we do not set a limit on how long an internship should be and offer flexible hours. We make sure the internship is aligned with each intern’s learning objectives which makes it a true experience.”

“Internships enrich the education experience for students and consequently reinforce Virginia as the top state for education, talent and business,” said Barry DuVal, president and CEO of the Virginia Chamber of Commerce. “The 32 recipients represent a distinguished group of employers that help to cultivate talent here in Virginia for the betterment of its students, regions and the commonwealth as a whole.”

MWHC hosts 5-15 students each year and offers internships year-round. On average, 81percent to 100percent of MWHC interns receive college credit for their internship and attend Virginia colleges and universities.

MWHC will be offering a Graduate Medical Education program (GME) starting July 2023. Stephanie Goldberg, MD is the Vice President and Designated Institutional Officer of the GME. The GME program will allow medical interns and residents to begin their training at Mary Washington Hospital and other outpatient facilities following their graduation from an accredited medical school. Dr. Goldberg visited Town Talk with Ted Schubel, WFVA radio to talk about the new GME program. Click here to listen to this discussion.
