Mary Washington Hospital School of Radiologic Technology Celebrates 26th Commencement

Fredericksburg, VA (May 14, 2019) – On Friday, May 3, 2019, the Mary Washington Hospital School of Radiologic Technology graduated five students after a rigorous 21-month program.

Special recognition was earned by graduating student Nichole Smith, winner of the Academic Excellence Award, the Outstanding Clinical Performer Award, and the Marcia Blair Patient Care and Compassion Award.

Brittney Barcus, Quality Education Coordinator at Mary Washington Hospital Radiology, received the Outstanding Clinical Instructor Award and the JRCERT Outstanding Performance as a Clinical Instructor in the Radiologic Sciences Award.

William Rice, Diagnostic Technologist at Stafford Hospital Radiology, received the Marcia Blair Patient Care and Compassion Award.

In 1988, the Fredericksburg region demonstrated high demand for Radiologic Technologists. Mary Washington Hospital’s Executive Committee made the decision to sponsor a Joint Review Committee of Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) accredited educational program. The decision to begin the program was also supported by Radiology Associates of Fredericksburg (RAF) with radiologist Donald Kenneweg, MD serving the first Medical Director for the school.

The Radiologic Technologist program at Mary Washington Hospital accepted its first class in August of 1991; the first class of seven students graduated in 1993. The program has successfully graduated over 175 radiographers with an overall 93% first time American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT) pass rate. Furthermore, the program has 97% job placement rate since its 1991 inception. The first classes were held across from the Mary Washington Hospital building at 2301 Fall Hill Ave in Fredericksburg, VA. As the school grew and more space became available, the school relocated to the General Washington Building at 2217 Princess Anne Street in Fredericksburg. In 2006, the program moved to its current home on Fall Hill Avenue, where it continues to strive for excellence in the imaging sciences. The program maintains support from Radiology Associates of Fredericksburg (RAF) and its current Medical Director, radiologist Dr. Thomas Medsker, MD.
