David S. Moccia, DO

Dr. Moccia grew up in south Florida with the drive to become a physician from an early age. He attended Florida State University for his bachelor’s degree in biochemistry. (To this day he remains a die-hard Seminoles fan!) Going to medical school in rural WV was a real eye opener for him to see how rural America functions and lives. He ended up attending medical school for an additional year during his clinical years to become an Anatomy fellow and help teach Anatomy to first year medical students on campus. This is when Dr. Moccia really started to develop a passion for teaching and knew it would somehow factor into his career going forward.

He became chief resident for his internal medicine residency in Myrtle Beach, SC, which further allowed him to hone his leadership skills and become immersed in medical education. After completing his internal medicine residency in 2019, he stayed at his training institution to become an academic hospitalist. He also took on the role of director of student medical education for VCOM-Carolinas at the Myrtle Beach clinical rotation site.

What attracted Dr. Moccia to Mary Washington Healthcare was the people and the mission of the healthcare system. Ideally healthcare systems should function to improve the health of the community they serve, and Mary Washington Healthcare has stayed true to that mission. Also, the leadership of the healthcare system is committed to that mission and creating world-class residency programs to further bolster the number of physicians in the community. In his off time he enjoys spending time with his wife and two daughters, traveling, and strength training.
