Interview Selection

The program uses Thalamus for all interview scheduling, invitations, and applicant communications. When reviewing applications, we consider the full picture of a candidate: academic performance, clinical preparation, communication skills, scholarly activity, community involvement, and geographic connection to the region. We give meaningful weight to Gold and Silver ERAS signals and have a strong interest in applicants with ties to Virginia.

All applicants must have completed USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK, or COMLEX Level 1 and Level 2, prior to being selected for an interview.

The program sponsors the J-1 visa only. H-1B and other visa types are not eligible for enrollment. All applicants from non-US medical schools must be eligible to work in the United States and obtain ECFMG certification prior to starting residency.

Meet and Greet Sessions

Throughout the interview season, we host informal Zoom sessions with current residents. These are great opportunities to ask candid questions and get a genuine sense of our program culture. Attendance is entirely optional and not tracked or factored into the selection process. Sessions are scheduled throughout the season and are not tied to interview dates.

Interview Format

Interviews are conducted via Zoom. Here is what to expect:

72 hours before your interview: You will receive an emailed interview packet with a program overview presentation, benefits and insurance information, and a guide to living in Fredericksburg. You may also reschedule your interview day through Thalamus up until this point.

The day before your interview: A Zoom link and meeting password will be sent to you by email.

Interview day: Each interview session runs approximately one hour and includes three sixteen-minute interviews, one with the Program Director and the other two with core faculty or a chief resident.

Post-Interview Communication

In keeping with national NRMP guidelines, we do not communicate with applicants about rank list placement or status after interviews are completed. We appreciate your understanding and encourage you to reach out with any general questions through our program coordinator.
