Program Overview

Welcome to the Mary Washington Hospital Addiction Medicine Fellowship Program in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Our brand-new, ACGME-accredited, one-year fellowship is designed to provide comprehensive, hands-on training in the prevention, evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing care of individuals with substance use disorders.

As a new and intentionally small fellowship, our program offers fellows the opportunity to help shape their educational experience while benefiting from individualized learning and close collaboration with faculty. Fellows gain experience across a variety of clinical environments, including inpatient and outpatient addiction medicine, inpatient psychiatry, pain management, opioid treatment, and longitudinal continuity care.

Training extends beyond Mary Washington Hospital and includes experiences at Snowden at Fredericksburg, Mary Washington Behavioral Health, the Rappahannock Area Community Services Board (RACSB), and Pinnacle FCCR. Additional elective opportunities may include the Psychiatric Institute of Washington, the Emergency Department at Mary Washington Hospital, or dedicated research time.

Our educational curriculum complements clinical training with weekly didactics and a dedicated academic half-day covering topics such as addiction pharmacology, behavioral interventions, therapeutic modalities, epidemiology and public health trends, treatment of substance use disorders in special populations, and emerging research.

Because this is a new program, fellows have a unique opportunity to tailor portions of their experience to individual interests, including advocacy, healthcare policy, and research. The program's small size also supports personalized learning and meaningful engagement with faculty and community partners.

Located in Fredericksburg, Virginia, our fellowship combines comprehensive addiction medicine training with the quality of life of a welcoming community situated within approximately an hour of both Washington, DC, and Richmond.

For the 2027–2028 academic year, we are recruiting two fellows to join our inaugural class.
