Program Director

Thank you for your interest in the Mary Washington Healthcare Internal Medicine Residency Program in Fredericksburg, Virginia.

Our residency offers a comprehensive clinical experience across two hospitals, our main 471-bed Mary Washington Hospital and our 100-bed Stafford Hospital, along with outpatient care in our internal medicine clinic and a wide range of elective subspecialty rotations within the health system and across local practices. Residents manage a diverse patient population with a broad array of medical conditions, supported by a strong didactic schedule focused on clinical reasoning, up-to-date guideline-based therapy, and POCUS training. All rotations, both inpatient and ambulatory, utilize Epic.

Why Mary Washington Healthcare?

Because where you train shapes who you become.

At Mary Washington Healthcare, we've built a program where you won't get lost in the crowd. You'll be known by your attendings, by your program director, by your colleagues across the health system. From day one, you'll be matched with a faculty mentor based on your specific career goals, whether that's subspecialty fellowship, hospital medicine, or primary care. That relationship isn't an afterthought here; it's foundational.

We also believe that becoming an excellent physician doesn't require sacrificing yourself in the process. Our 4+2+2 schedule is deliberately structured to give you clinical depth alongside protected time for learning, reflection, and life outside the hospital. Residents here have families, hobbies, and rest, and we think that makes them better doctors.

For residents with a clear sense of direction, our Primary Care Track and Medical Education Track offer structured, intentional pathways, not just added responsibilities, but real development in the areas that matter most to you.

Fredericksburg offers the quality of life to match: a community that feels like home, with Washington DC and Richmond both within an hour. The cost of living here lets you live well during your training, not just survive it.

Whatever your path, subspecialty fellowship, hospital-based medicine, or primary care, Mary Washington Healthcare is dedicated to providing the clinical, educational, and scholarly opportunities to help you get there. We look forward to the possibility of you growing with us.
