Mary Washington and Stafford Hospitals Receive an “A” Rating for Patient Safety in Fall 2018 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade

Fredericksburg, VA, November 13, 2018 – Mary Washington and Stafford Hospitals each received an “A” letter grade from The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit organization committed to driving quality, safety, and transparency in the U.S. health care system. This is the fourth consecutive rating period in which Stafford Hospital has received an “A” grade. Mary Washington and Stafford Hospitals are committed to reducing errors, infections, and accidents that can harm patients. The newly released Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades, assign A, B, C, D and F letter grades to hospitals nationwide.

“Mary Washington Healthcare is honored to be recognized by Leapfrog for our dedication to patient safety at Mary Washington and Stafford Hospitals,” said Michael McDermott, MD, MBA, President and Chief Executive Officer of Mary Washington Healthcare. “Mary Washington Healthcare’s commitment to high reliability principles drives us to be the safest place for our community’s citizens to receive care and these “A” grades reflect our team’s devotion to providing safe, quality care in a patient-centered environment.”

“This is the only national rating of how well hospitals protect patients from preventable harm and death, such as medical errors, infections, and injuries,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “Receiving an ‘A’ Safety Grade means a hospital is among the best in the country for preventing these terrible problems and putting their patients first, 24 hours a day.”

Developed under the guidance of an Expert Panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses 27 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign A, B, C, D and F grades to more than 2,600 U.S. hospitals twice per year. It is calculated by top patient safety experts, peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public.
