Mary Washington Healthcare Purchases daVinci Xi Robotic Surgical Technology

Fredericksburg, Va. – (Sept. 7, 2017) – Mary Washington Healthcare (MWHC) has utilized da Vinci robotic technology in the operating room for 10 years and recently upgraded to one of the newest models. Launched in April 2014, the da Vinci Xi System has broader capabilities than prior generations. It can be used across a wide spectrum of minimally invasive surgical procedures and has been optimized for multi-quadrant surgeries (procedures in which instruments must be able to reach up and down and across the abdomen or chest).

MWHC now has the most current, efficient robotic technology in the region, plus an experienced group of professionals who are experts in their field.

Studies of da Vinci Surgery have shown the following benefits in comparison to open surgery:

  • Less blood loss
  • Fewer complications
  • Less need for narcotic pain medicine
  • A faster recovery
  • Smaller incisions associated with minimal scarring

Dr. Gregory Szlyk, director of the robotics program at MWHC, stated, “As a surgeon and the director of the robotics program, I can’t tell you how excited I am to have the daVinci Xi here at Mary Washington Healthcare. This is going to revolutionize the care of surgical patients in Fredericksburg, Virginia. The latest in robotics technology affords us the mobility and access to surgical procedures that have previously been unattainable with the older model of robotic technology. We’re looking forward to improved patient outcomes and quicker hospital stays. I think I can speak for all the other surgeons in general surgery, urology, and gynecology who are using the robotic platforms, we are happy the Xi is here at Mary Washington.”
