Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

The Mary Washington Hospital Level III, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) provides a world class level of care to mothers and their babies in our community and allows these families to be close to their homes, near family and support systems.

The Mary Washington Hospital NICU admits approximately 350 babies per year and provides care for newborn infants as small as one pound.

The NICU is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week by board-certified neonatologists from Children’s National. Neonatology is the subspecialty of pediatrics which involves the medical care of newborn infants who are born premature or with low birth weight, and those infants with birth defects or problems with breathing, infection, or birth asphyxia.

Children's National Health System

In addition to our Children’s National neonatologists, we have a highly specialized team that includes neonatal nurse practitioners, registered nurses, respiratory therapists, physical and occupational therapists, case managers, dietitians and lactation consultants.

The NICU at Mary Washington Hospital also has a neonatal transport team that provides ground ambulance transport for infants less than or equal to 28 days of life. These transports allow for babies born at local hospitals without a Level III NICU a local NICU option for specialized care.

Your generous gift will support the mission of Mary Washington Hospital NICU as we provide care to everyone regardless of their ability to pay. It will also contribute to upgrading the facility with the latest technology, medical equipment and the best environment for babies and families during their stay.
