We are recruiting for both incoming PGY1 and PGY2 residents this year through ERAS. We accept 4 residents per PGY year.

Joint Transitional Year/Neurology Program

For incoming PGY-1 residents, Mary Washington Healthcare offers a Joint Advanced/Preliminary (AP) Transitional Year Program designed specifically for applicants entering our Advanced Neurology Residency Program. This pathway provides the opportunity to complete your Transitional Year at Mary Washington Healthcare before seamlessly transitioning into our Neurology Residency Program. By remaining within the same institution, you can build a strong clinical foundation while benefiting from a familiar and supportive learning environment.

To be considered for this pathway, applicants must apply through ERAS to both:

• Advanced Neurology Residency Program: 2347180A0

• Transitional Neuro MWHC - Preliminary Program: 2347999P1

If you match into our Advanced Neurology Residency Program, a position in our Transitional Year Program will be reserved for you. However, applicants may choose to complete their Transitional Year at another institution if they prefer.

After ranking the Advanced Neurology Residency Program on your NRMP rank order list, you will also complete a supplemental rank list for the Joint Program. The NRMP only considers applicants for the Joint Program after they have successfully matched into the Advanced Neurology Residency Program.

Your interview with the Department of Neurology will also serve as consideration for the Joint Program, so a separate interview with the Transitional Year Program is not required. During interview season, applicants will also have the opportunity to attend a virtual Open House to learn more about the Transitional Year experience at Mary Washington Healthcare.

Note: Applicants to our Advanced Neurology Program may also apply to our Joint Transitional Year/Neurology Program to complete their intern year. Participation in the Transitional Year track is optional and not required for admission to the Advanced Neurology Program. Applicants who wish to complete their full PGY-1 through PGY-4 training at our institution should apply to both program
tracks.

Interview Selection

The program uses Thalamus for all interview scheduling, invitations, and applicant communications. When reviewing applications, we consider the full picture of a candidate: academic performance, clinical preparation, communication skills, scholarly activity, community involvement, and geographic connection to the region. We give meaningful weight to ERAS signals and have a strong interest in applicants with ties to Virginia.

All applicants must have completed USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK, or COMLEX Level 1 and Level 2, prior to being selected for an interview.

The program sponsors the J-1 visa only. H-1B and other visa types are not eligible for enrollment. All applicants from non-US medical schools must be eligible to work in the United States and obtain ECFMG certification prior to starting residency.

Post-Interview Communication

In keeping with national NRMP guidelines, we do not communicate with applicants about rank list placement or status after interviews are completed. We appreciate your understanding and encourage you to reach out with any general questions through our program coordinator.
