We are recruiting for both incoming PGY1 and PGY2 residents this year through ERAS. We accept 4 residents per PGY year.

Joint Transitional Year/Neurology Program

For prospective PGY1s, we are pleased to offer a Joint Advanced/Preliminary (AP) Transitional Year Program. This opportunity to complete your Transitional Year at Mary Washington Healthcare creates a seamless transition into our Advanced Neurology Residency Program. This integrated pathway allows you to build a strong clinical foundation while remaining within a supportive and familiar learning environment.

If you are interested in pursuing your transitional year with MWHC, please be sure to apply to both the Advanced Neurology Program (code: 2347180A0) and the TY Neuro program (code: 2347999P1) through ERAS. If you match with us, a spot in our TY program is reserved for you. However, you have the option of completing your transitional year elsewhere if desired.

After entering the match list for the Advanced Neurology Program, a supplemental list should be completed. The NRMP match process for the Joint Program only considers those applicants who have matched into the Advanced Neurology Program. The interview with the Department of Neurology includes consideration for the Joint Program. An interview with the transitional year program is not required. There will be an opportunity to attend a virtual Open House to learn more about the TY year during the interview season.

Interview Selection

The program uses Thalamus for all interview scheduling, invitations, and applicant communications. When reviewing applications, we consider the full picture of a candidate: academic performance, clinical preparation, communication skills, scholarly activity, community involvement, and geographic connection to the region. We give meaningful weight to ERAS signals and have a strong interest in applicants with ties to Virginia.

All applicants must have completed USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK, or COMLEX Level 1 and Level 2, prior to being selected for an interview.

The program sponsors the J-1 visa only. H-1B and other visa types are not eligible for enrollment. All applicants from non-US medical schools must be eligible to work in the United States and obtain ECFMG certification prior to starting residency.

Post-Interview Communication

In keeping with national NRMP guidelines, we do not communicate with applicants about rank list placement or status after interviews are completed. We appreciate your understanding and encourage you to reach out with any general questions through our program coordinator.
