Welcome from the Gastroenterology Fellowship Program Director

Dear Colleagues and Prospective Fellows,

It is with great excitement and pride that I announce the launch of the first-ever ACGME-accredited Gastroenterology Fellowship Program at Mary Washington Healthcare. This achievement marks a transformative milestone in our institution’s continued commitment to clinical excellence, academic advancement, and specialty training.

Beginning in July 2026, we will welcome our inaugural class of two fellows. As we continue to accept two fellows per year, the program will naturally grow to include six fellows over the next three years. We are honored to contribute to the development of the next generation of gastroenterologists and to advance the quality of care available to our community.

Mary Washington Healthcare is a dynamic regional health system serving Fredericksburg and neighboring communities, including Northern Virginia. Ideally situated between Washington, D.C. and Richmond, Virginia, it offers convenient access to both metropolitan areas. Our service area spans a wide demographic and geographic spectrum, from rural communities to urban centers, providing fellows with a rich and diverse clinical experience. Mary Washington Hospital, a 471-bed tertiary care facility, offers an exceptional training ground for both inpatient and ambulatory gastrointestinal care.

The Gastroenterology Fellowship Program will offer a comprehensive, hands-on training experience across the full spectrum of GI and liver diseases. Fellows will gain robust experience in core procedures such as EGD, colonoscopy, capsule endoscopy, and motility testing, along with advanced training in endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). Our curriculum is designed to foster both procedural expertise and clinical judgment, while cultivating academic curiosity and leadership.

One of the key strengths of our program lies in our exceptional faculty, a diverse and passionate group of educators dedicated to personalized mentorship, academic rigor, and clinical excellence. Fellows will have the opportunity to explore subspecialty interests within Gastroenterology and Hepatology and receive tailored guidance as they navigate their individual career paths.

In addition to a strong clinical training experience, our fellows will participate in didactic teaching, interdisciplinary case conferences, research opportunities, and quality improvement initiatives. Our goal is to develop well-rounded, compassionate, and confident gastroenterologists who are prepared to lead in both clinical and academic settings.

We are thrilled to begin this exciting new chapter and invite you to be part of a fellowship that values innovation, mentorship, and patient-centered care. Together, we aim to build a program of excellence that not only serves our community but also advances the field of Gastroenterology.

Thank you for your interest in the Mary Washington Gastroenterology Fellowship Program. We look forward to the journey ahead and to welcoming a dynamic group of fellows who will help shape the future with us.
