Program Overview

Mary Washington Healthcare’s Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship Program is based at the region’s largest and most comprehensive hospital, serving a diverse population across rural, suburban, and urban communities. As a fellow, you will train in a dynamic clinical environment that offers exposure to a broad spectrum of cardiovascular conditions.

Throughout the duration of your fellowship, you will actively manage patients across inpatient consult service, critical care service and outpatient settings, including continuity of care through a dedicated ambulatory clinic. You will be trained and actively performing the entire spectrum of cardiovascular diagnostic modalities, including echocardiography, TEE, stress test, nuclear medicine stress test, cardiac and coronary CT and cardiac MRI. The fellows will be performing invasive diagnostic procedure from coronary angiography, right heart catheterization and electrophysiologic studies. Our institution hosts multiple teaching programs, including Internal Medicine Residency additionally fellows are expected to contribute to the academic mission by participating in the education and mentorship of trainees.

The fellowship’s core faculty includes an array of physicians whose career interests include, preventive cardiology, coronary artery disease, acute coronary syndromes and coronary microvascular dysfunction. Mary Washington has a very busy interventional program, performing complex coronary and peripheral intervention as well as structural heart disease interventions. The electrophysiology program is a very developed program with exposure to all type of PM and ICD devices, including leadless devices and atrial appendix closure devices. The EP program also perform all type of ablation procedures from atrial fibrillation to complex VT ablation procedures.

Fellows will be trained in the latest advances in cardiology, while emphasizing a patient-centered approach to care. Opportunities for participation in scholarly activity, quality improvement projects, and patient safety initiatives are integral to the fellowship experience. The mission of the Cardiology Fellowship Program aligns with that of the Sponsoring Institution: “Mary Washington Healthcare exists to improve the health of the people in the communities we serve.” The program is committed to training competent, autonomous cardiologists who are well-prepared to meet the cardiac care needs of the community. By the completion of the fellowship, you will be equipped with the critical thinking, clinical acumen, technical expertise in all non-invasive and invasive diagnostic modalities as well as leadership skills necessary to provide high-quality, evidence-based cardiovascular care – prepared to meet the evolving challenges of today’s healthcare landscape.
