Gratitude in Action: Honoring Those Who Give Their Time

At Mary Washington Hospice and Grief Support Services, compassion is at the heart of everything we do. That compassion is shared by the extraordinary individuals who give their time, energy and presence as volunteers.
Whether they are sitting bedside offering comfort, supporting families through grief or helping in other capacities behind the scenes, our volunteers embody the very spirit of care. This National Volunteer Month, we pause to recognize and celebrate their invaluable contributions to our patients, their families, and our staff.
Hospice volunteers may spend their time holding a patient’s hand, listening to cherished memories or simply sitting quietly to provide a reassuring presence. Their impact might be with a grieving family member, offering them solace in a peer-led support group. These moments, though sometimes small, help bring dignity, comfort and connection to patients and families navigating some of life’s most difficult moments.
While no gesture can fully capture our gratitude, we are committed to recognizing the incredible dedication of our volunteers.

As one member of our leadership team shared:
“Volunteers are not just a part of our work, they are essential to it. Their willingness to ‘be present’ brings comfort to patients and families in ways words often cannot. To each one of our volunteers: thank you”
The true impact of volunteering is best expressed by those who live it. Here’s what some of our dedicated volunteers have shared about their experiences:
- “I would not trade my volunteer days and the wonderful people I have met and talked to for anything in the world. I knew what hospice was but had no first-hand experience with it.”
- “Having lost two spouses and a very dear friend to cancer, I quickly learned what a devoted, dedicated, caring team of professionals comprises the Hospice teams. I watched them fulfill their roles in both Delaware and Virginia. I found my calling-I became a Hospice volunteer!”
- “Getting to know the patients and their families has been most impactful. I look forward to sharing a cheery hello and sincere concern for their situations. I am rewarded with wonderful stories... from foods the deceased wife cooked in the cherished cast iron skillet to "I'm so glad you called...I needed to talk to someone today. This interaction has reinforced my life belief that life is what you make of it and being positive has many intrinsic rewards."
- “Every family and their family members hold a special place in my heart. I see family members in public places, and they still say thank you. My person loved you because you showered them with love.
These reflections capture the mutual nature of giving — while volunteers offer comfort and care, they often receive just as much in return.
