Our Hospice Services
Comprehensive Care & Comfort from Mary Washington Healthcare
The primary goal of Hospice is to manage pain and the symptoms of the patients’
condition so that the patient is comfortable and alert enough to make
decisions. Hospice provides a comprehensive approach to care that includes
patients and their loved ones. Hospice staff enable a family to work through
end-of-life logistics while grieving the illness and loss of a loved one.
Patients often are reassured by the presence of our workers and by knowing
that their family has capable help. Preparations for the future are made
with the patient so that their final days can be spent in peace with family
and loved ones.
As a medical hospice, Mary Washington Hospice also offers a broad range
of services that supports patients and their families including:
- Emotional and spiritual support
- Community resource information
- Arranging for hospice related medications, medical equipment and supplies
- Family grief and bereavement support
Instead of entering hospice care at the last possible second, hospice staff
urges families to work through logistics and future wishes with the patient
while he or she can still communicate their desires.
Our Hospice Team
A Hospice care team incorporates many clinical and non-clinical professionals
that are dedicated to making you and your family’s hospice experience
the best it can be. Under the guidance of our physician medical director,
the teams regularly communicate about the needs and concerns of the patient
Some of our team members include:

and oversees medical hospice care of all patients. Our medical director,
Patrick McManus, MD, is one of only 3% of medical directors in the nation
board certified in hospice care.
Skilled Nurses: Our nurses see the patients regularly to provide medications, monitor
activity, and serve as liaison to physicians.
Medical Social Workers: Our medical social workers work mostly with family members to manage
healthcare financial obligations.
Hospice Aides: Our hospice aides provide hands on care to patients, including bathing,
Spiritual & Grief Counselors: We have professional counselors and/or clergy available as needed for
patient and family support.
Massage and Expressive Therapists: Our music, art and massage therapists work with patients and families
to help manage stress and anxieties.

while our therapists help patients manage their condition.
