Dr. Richards is a fellowship-trained sports medicine surgeon, specializing in the minimally invasive and open treatment of knee and shoulder injuries. He completed his Orthopaedic Surgery residency at Cooper University Hospital in Camden, NJ. After residency, Dr. Richards chose to complete a fellowship in sports medicine at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia, PA. During his fellowship training, he gained expertise in cartilage restoration and regeneration, hip arthroscopy, multi-ligamentous knee injuries, and other complex sports medicine procedures. He also spent significant time during fellowship with sports medicine surgeons at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia where he gained additional expertise in taking care of children and adolescent injuries, including cartilage injuries, shoulder injuries, and specialized ligament reconstruction in patients with open growth plates. Dr. Richards is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine. He also has a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering with a concentration in Biomedical Engineering (musculoskeletal modeling). Dr. Richards enjoys golf, basketball, snowboarding, and water sports. He resides in Fredericksburg with his wife, Lauren, and their three children.
