Health Fairs in our Community
On Saturday, August 29, 2015, the Mary Washington Healthcare iVolunteer
Council hosted the first MWHC Community Health & Wellness Fair at
the John F. Fick III, Conference Center on the MWH campus. MWHC iVolunteer
Council invited several non-profit agencies, community organizations and
civic clubs to participate by sharing their mission and resources with
the public. Over 50 vendors, including 11 MWHC service lines/departments,
handed out educational materials and resources to 300+ attendees.
Several took advantage of the multiple screenings, including vision, hearing,
blood pressure, glucose as well as confidential HIV/AIDS testing. Many
also took advantage of the Moss Free Clinic and the Germanna Community
College Dental Hygenist students offering dental exams. The Rappahannock
Area Health District provided TDAP immunizations for middle-school aged
students. Attendees participated in fitness demonstrations. Instructors
taught the basics of zumba, salsa dancing and boot camp fitness training.
After working out, attendees quenched their thirst with a sample of Dr.
Yum’s tasty, healthy smoothie.
In addition to the participating non-profits, three local entities also
participated as sponsors. Fredericksburg Lions’ Club, Greenfields
and NSWC Federal Credit Union’s contributions made it possible for
all screenings to be free for the attendees. It is through continued partnerships
and collaboration like this event that Mary Washington Healthcare continues
to lead the charge for making this area a true Healthy Community.
