MWH Celebrates 20 Years of Cardiac Surgery
In early 1994, with much support from community members and local organizations,
Mary Washington Hospital received permission from the Northwestern Virginia
Health Services Agency to perform open-heart surgery at its newly built
hospital site. That November, the first heart surgery candidate placed
his life in the hands of cardiac surgeon John Armitage and the MWH cardiac
In 2014, Mary Washington Hospital staff, administrators, and patients celebrated
20 years of cardiac surgery. In those two decades, the team has performed
over 7,000 cardiac surgery procedures and has received professional rankings
and distinctions that place Mary Washington Hospital among the top cardiovascular
surgery centers in the country.
The 20th anniversary celebration highlight was the unveiling of a timeline
wall that outlines the program from its early beginnings in 1994. It displays
descriptions of procedural advancements, news, medical highlights, and
other significant milestones. Also on the wall are stories from past cardiac
surgery patients and photos of our current cardiovascular surgical team,
including Alex Na, MD, and John Cardone, MD, FACS.
The celebration included a reception for past MWH cardiac surgery patients,
Associates, and community members who have been affiliated with the cardiac
surgery program. Featured were comments from the cardiac surgery team’s
past and present leadership, including one of its early surgeons, John
McManus, MD. MWH was also pleased to host Mr. Billy Gardner, our first
cardiac surgery patient.
While the history of cardiac surgery at MWH tells a great story, the program’s
future is full of excitement and promise as a new Structural Heart Program
takes shape. It includes a Valve Clinic, a collaborative heart team, and
a specially equipped hybrid room for advanced procedures. As MWH prepares
this room, current patients are being evaluated for minimally invasive
cardiac surgeries, such as TAVR (transcatheter aortic valve replacement),
through the hospital’s Valve Clinic.
