In collaboration with your physician, Mary Washington Hospital’s Outpatient Nutrition Counseling program offers education and assistance with developing a personalized nutrition plan for healthy eating to address a variety of medical problems.
Registered dietitians Services are provided by an experienced registered dietitian (RD). Registered dietitians are credentialed health professionals who have been trained in the science of food and nutrition. The RD can provide you with expert, practical nutrition advice. They can separate facts from fads and translate nutritional science into information that you can use to improve your health and fight disease.

Insurance coverage Your insurance may or may not cover medical nutrition therapy, depending on your diagnosis and specific plan benefits. We encourage you to check with your insurance provider to determine your coverage.
Our dietitian is an approved Medicare provider for medical nutrition therapy. The IRS recognizes nutrition therapy in the treatment and prevention of disease as a deductible medical expense.
Cost of services We charge $20 for each 15 minutes.
Typical appointments:
- Initial consultation (1 to 1 ½ hours): $80-$120
- Follow-up (45 minutes): $60
- Follow-up (30 minutes): $40
- Follow-up (15 minutes): $20
What to expect
- Obtain a referral and a copy of recent lab results from your physician (growth charts for pediatric patients).
- Complete a food record prior to your appointment.
- Present your insurance card and sign registration forms.
- Complete a questionnaire about your top three nutrition questions.
- Complete a review of your medical and lifestyle history.
- Receive an individualized meal plan and nutrition education related to your health goals.
- Learn practical skills such as reading food labels, eating out, portion management, behavior modification, food preparation tips, and so on.
Involving family members/caregivers We encourage patients to bring another support person to sit in on sessions. Interpreters and special assistance for the hearing impaired or other disabilities can be arranged with advance notice.
Hours Appointments are available Monday through Friday and some Saturdays. A variety of times are available to accommodate patients’ needs.
How to schedule an appointment Please call 540.741.2000 and select option 3 to request an appointment for medical nutrition therapy. A physician referral is required.

We are located at 5008 Southpoint Parkway, Fredericksburg, VA 22407.
Parking is available in front of our office. Patients can be driven up to the front of building, with a short walk to the entrance. Handicapped parking spaces are available, along with a FRED Transit bus stop in front of the building.
