Our Medical Laboratories benefit healthcare providers and their patients with:

• Continuity of care between inpatient, outpatient and emergency testing
• Electronic laboratory results available 24 hours a day with online result viewing or scheduled auto-faxing
• Laboratory services for patients (including STAT requests) throughout our community
• Our locally owned and operated laboratory that supports employment in our community

Our Professional Staff

Our board-certified pathologists, technologists and support personnel are highly trained and dedicated to putting the patient first and meeting your needs. We offer personalized service and clinically relevant strategies to accommodate the needs of our community and health care providers.

On-Call Pathologist

A pathologist is available 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, for clinical and anatomical consultations.

Our Primary Reference Laboratory

Mary Washington Hospital (MWH) utilizes Mayo Medical Laboratories for its esoteric testing needs. Mayo Medical Laboratories, the reference laboratory for Mayo Clinic, is a distinctive leader in the field of esoteric testing and offers consultations with its physicians and scientists. This collaboration strengthens our efforts to provide exceptional laboratory services and patient care to the community we serve.

Superior Turnaround Time

• Results from STAT pick-ups within two hours of receipt in main laboratory
• Most routine tests completed the same day
• Comprehensive in-house test menu for expeditious laboratory service
• Collaboration with Mayo Medical Laboratories for esoteric testing and timely reporting

Consultations

• Consultations with pathologists who are board certified in clinical, anatomic and cytopathology (cytologic pathology)
• Highly specialized consultations with Mayo Medical Laboratories pathologists and other specialists

Diagnostic Services

• Full-service laboratory serving clients in the greater Fredericksburg region (Stafford, Spotsylvania, King George, Caroline, and Orange counties) 
• Broad range of tests using advanced instrumentation and technically proven, accurate methodologies

Anatomic Pathology

• Cytopathology, including ThinPrep® technology
• Fine-needle aspiration biopsies and procurement of superficial lesions
• Histology (staffed 7 days per week)
• Immunochemistry techniques (over 50 performed on site)
• Surgical pathology (the majority of biopsy results are available within 24 hours)
• 8 hour turnaround time available for biopsies, with advanced notice
• Frozen section analysis for immediate diagnostic information to surgeons

Hematology

• Peripheral blood and bone marrow studies
• Diagnostic and therapeutic
• Monitoring of blood disorders

Coagulation

• Wide range of hemostatic testing
• Testing for hereditary bleeding and thrombotic disorders

Clinical Chemistry, Urinalysis

• Extensive repertoire of chemical analyte quantification through state-of-the-art instrumentation
• Complete test menu for therapeutic drug monitoring

Microbiology

• Complete range of organism identification and susceptibility testing
• Expert consultants in bacteriology, mycology, mycobacteriology, parasitology and virology
• Tuberculosis T-Spot for rapid identification
• PCR testing for rapid MRSA identification

 Transfusion Service

• Pretransfusion testing for blood component therapy
• Comprehensive antibody detection methodology
• On-site access to blood and blood products including plasma and platelets as well as testing for special attributes 

Outpatient Services

• Excellent, knowledgeable Client Services team available Monday - Friday, 7 AM - 5:30 PM, Saturday, 7 AM - 3:30 PM
• Courier services providing timely laboratory pick-ups, pre-scheduled to meet your needs
• Services to nursing homes, assisted living facilities, physician offices and clinics
