Mary Washington Hospital’s Heartburn Treatment Center is a regional program dedicated to delivering world-class care for the diagnosis and treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

GERD is a condition caused by stomach acid backing up, or “refluxing” into the lower esophagus causing many symptoms, including heartburn.  It affects approximately 30% of the population, many of whom suffer severe symptoms.  GERD is also associated with sleep disturbances and decreased work productivity.

Although Heartburn is the most common symptom, GERD can cause regurgitation, chest pain, difficulty swallowing, hoarseness cough and others. It is a disease that usually progresses over the years and requires a treatment choice with lifetime symptoms in mind. It is very important for GERD sufferers to undergo the thorough evaluation offered by the Heartburn Treatment Center and understand the available treatment options. In addition, GERD can lead to esophageal cancer.
