MWH Trauma Center Receives ACS COT Verification
The Verification Review Committee, an ad hoc arm of the Committee on Trauma (COT) of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) has verified MWH’s Trauma Center as Level II, recognizing its dedication to providing optimal care for injured patients. Mary Washington is currently the only Level II trauma center in the state to receive this prestigious verification, joining an elite group of only two other Virginia trauma centers with ACS verification: Inova Fairfax Hospital and VCU Medical Center.
Established by the American College of Surgeons in 1987, the COTs Consultation/Verification Program for Hospitals promotes development of trauma centers in which participants provide not only the resources necessary for trauma care, but the entire spectrum of care for injured patients, from pre-hospitalization through rehabilitation.
Verified trauma centers must meet essential criteria. Such as education, professional development, standards of care, and assessment of outcomes. The ACS COT verification program does not designate trauma centers but, rather, provides confirmation of a center’s commitment to providing the highest quality trauma care.
MWH was designated a trauma center by the Virginia Department of Health in 2008. The MWH Trauma Center has cared for 2,330 trauma patients through 2011. Earlier last year, the MWH Emergency Department reconstructed their dedicated trauma treatment areas to better accommodate multiple trauma patients and to allow for instructional training for clinical staff and EMS personnel.
