Among Top 50 Hospitals for Digestive Disorders

Mary Washington Hospital Ranks 47th for Digestive Disorders
In U.S. News & World Report’s 2009-10 America’s Best Hospitals Guide

Mary Washington Hospital has been ranked 47th in digestive disorders in U.S. News’s 2009-10 America’s Best Hospitals.  Now in its 20th year, the multi-platform 2009-10 America’s Best Hospitals guide is the most extensive hospital ranking to date.  It includes rankings of 174 medical centers nationwide in 16 specialties with full data available online for another 1500 unranked hospitals.

The 16 ranked specialties are cancer; diabetes and endocrine disorders; digestive disorders; ear nose and throat; geriatric care; gynecology; heart and heart surgery; kidney disorders; neurology and neurosurgery; ophthalmology; orthopedics; psychiatry; rehabilitation; respiratory disorders; rheumatology; and urology.

“At Mary Washington Hospital, we pride ourselves on providing the best care to any patient who seeks treatment at our facility,” says Kevin Van Renan, VP Hospital Operations.  “This national designation in the area of digestive disorders, confirms that we have an extraordinary team of medical professionals and support staff that are dedicated to performance improvement and providing the best care for the community.”

“This is affirmation that MWH is evolving into a high-level tertiary care center that can take care of very sick patients; and that’s what this community needs,” says John F. Fick, III, Chairman of the MediCorp Board of Trustees, the hospital’s parent company.

To be considered for a ranking in many of the specialties, including digestive disorders, a hospital had to either have at least a specified volume of certain procedures and conditions or had to have been nominated by at least one physician in the past three years.  The hospital specialty ranking is also based on reputation, death rate, patient safety and factors such as nurse staffing and technology.
