Community Engagement

Providing Community Benefit

Mary Washington Healthcare defines community benefit as activities that address community needs and priorities primarily through treatment, disease prevention, and improving health status, including:

  • Financial assistance (free care) and uncompensated care for vulnerable or underserved patients;
  • Grants, cash and in-kind support to community nonprofit organizations;
  • Education and research that improve overall community health

It is very important to us that people from our various communities help us assess community need and determine how we provide community benefit. To engage such community support,  the Mary Washington Healthcare Board of Trustees established a Citizen Advisory Council in 2010.

Area residents make up the Citizen Advisory Council, which offers several opportunities to participate, depending upon each member’s interests and availability.

Financial assistance

We provide free and reduced-cost care for some of the most vulnerable members of our community in several ways:

  • Free care is provided to patients who do not have health insurance and do not have the money to pay their bills. Free care helps families with combined incomes that are at or less than 200 percent of the Federal Poverty Guidelines.
  • Mary Washington Healthcare also lowers the amount qualified patients owe on their bills. Discounts are available to families with combined incomes from 201 percent to 400 percent of the Federal Poverty Guidelines. (FP Guidelines)
  • Payment plans are also available for patients who have large bills or bills they cannot afford to pay all at once.
