Irene M. Summers is a registered nurse with 41 years of nursing experience. She graduated from Germanna Community College with an associate degree, Virginia Commonwealth University/Medical College of Virginia with a BSN, and George Mason University with an M.S.N., magna cum laude. Mrs. Summers is currently the administrative director for preoperative, endoscopy, IVT, PACU and the Surgical Care Center at Mary Washington Hospital. Mrs. Summers is accountable for the integration, facilitation and coordination of the leadership, management, clinical and quality initiatives of Surgical Care Center. She has been instrumental in the development of the Endoscopy Center and the bariatrics program at Mary Washington Hospital.

Mrs. Summers has been active at the national and state level with the Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates; she was a member of the national education committee and chaired the membership committee for the Old Dominion Gastroenterology regional chapter. She speaks about colon cancer at community events. She is member of the AORN, ASPN, National Association of Bariatric Nurses, ANA and Virginia Nurses Association.

She was nominated for the Mary Washington Healthcare Partner of the Year, and received the Mary Washington Pillar of Excellence Award for Outstanding Leadership in May 2007.
