Our mission Mary Washington Healthcare’s mission is to improve the health status of all people in our community. One way we do this is by offering charity care – discounts on medical bills and payment arrangements that let you make a payment plan for your medical bills.
Financial help is available to people who need help paying their healthcare bills for “medically necessary” services. In other words, we will provide assistance for services you need in order to get better or to manage conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure. Financial assistance cannot be used to pay for cosmetic procedures (for example, face-lifts) or for care your doctor does not think you need.
Charity care Free care is provided to patients who do not have health insurance and do not have the money to pay their bills. Free care helps families with combined incomes that are at or less than 200 percent of the federal government’s poverty guidelines.
Discounted care Mary Washington Healthcare lowers the amount qualified patients owe on their bills if they do not have insurance or if a service they need is not covered by their insurance. The discount helps those who find themselves with a serious medical situation and cannot pay the whole hospital bill but are able to pay some portion of it. Discounts are available to families with combined incomes from 201 percent to 400 percent of the federal government’s poverty guidelines. Discounts range between 20 – 60 percent of the amount that you would usually have to pay.
Payment arrangements Our financial counselors will work with patients who have large bills that they cannot afford to pay all at once.
Financial assistance process We will review your account to determine the level of assistance we can offer. First we see if you are eligible for charity (free) care. If you are ineligible, we will review your account to determine whether you are eligible for a discount. If you cannot pay the entire amount of the bill, we may set up a plan so you can pay your bill over time.
If you own your own home, you may still be eligible for either charity (free) care or a discount on your bill. Mary Washington Healthcare does not count what your home is worth against you when we review what you are able to pay. We also do not count the first $50,000 you have in cash or in bank accounts.
All of your information is kept confidential and only used to determine whether you are eligible for financial assistance from Mary Washington Healthcare. We never share your information with any other organization.
To discuss your eligibility, we encourage you to call one of our financial counselors at 540.741.1041 or toll-free at 1.800.395.2455. Our hours are Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. If you leave a message, we will call you back.
Submit an application for assistance In addition, you can complete and submit a financial assistance application. Once we have had the opportunity to review your information, one of our financial counselors will follow up with a phone call.
