The path from pregnancy to parenthood is childbirth. For most pregnant
women, the labor and birth process can be both overwhelming and joyful.
Attending a childbirth education class can lessen the anxiety for new
moms and their partners. At Mary Washington Healthcare, we strongly encourage
you to participate in one of our many childbirth classes taught by certified

The path from pregnancy to parenthood is childbirth. Classes will help
you and your birth partner prepare to give birth. Childbirth classes include
information on the labor process, relaxation, and breathing, role of the
partner, medical interventions, cesarean delivery, and the post partum
period. You will tour the maternity ward during one of your classes. Prepared
Childbirth encourages a woman to use relaxation and breathing techniques
to work together with her body, her partner, and her caregivers to give
birth to her baby.
$90 per couple
This course is for expectant parents who cannot attend a full Prepared
Childbirth series. Class covers basic process of labor and delivery, breathing
and relaxation, what to expect in the hospital, cesarean section and includes
a tour of the maternity ward.
$65 per couple
Parent’s Expecting Multiples
This class is for families expecting multiple infants. This three hour
class has been designed to address the special needs of families expecting
twins, triplets or more. Class covers: Adjusting to the news, finances,
good nutrition and slowing down, surviving bedrest at home and in the
hospital, identifying preterm labor, a very special delivery, touring
the neonatal intensive care unit, breastfeeding multiples, helpful tips

Caring for Your Baby
Breastfeeding: Great Beginnings and Beyond
This 2.5-hour class is for both moms and dads and focuses on the basics
of breastfeeding your newborn. Preparation and education will help you
feel more confident as you start this journey. We will also discuss pumps,
when to start pumping, milk storage, and returning to work. Classes are
taught by Certified Lactation Consultants. Plan to attend this class prior
to your delivery so you will feel more confident breastfeeding your baby
right from the start.
Home with Baby
This class teaches first-time parents to learn what to expect in the first
two weeks at home with your new baby. Learn the basics of infant care;
receive answers to your questions. Practice bathing and diapering on newborn dolls.
$30 per couple
Learn the ABC’s of infant CPR (birth to 1 year of age) with skill
performance on mannequins. This is a must for
ALLparents who do not already know CPR. This course is non-certifiable.
$40 per couple
This class is for big brothers and sisters (to be) who are two through
seven years of age. At least one parent must attend the class with the
child. This one-hour class includes a tour, video and practicing (big
brother/sister skills). Note: the class must have a minimum of 5 registrants
to be held.
Babysitting and Child Safety
Learn what it takes to be a good baby-sitter for young adults twelve years
and older. An action-packed course designed to prepare baby-sitters to
learn about the care, and safety of their young charges. This one-day
Institute Guidelines and upon successful completion of this course all participants
receive an ASHI Baby-sitter Card.
Mother and Babies Group
This free, postpartum support (0 – 6 months) group is sponsored
by Mary Washington Healthcare. Meet other mothers and share experiences,
learn about baby care topics from a nurse coordinator, weigh your baby
on a medical grade scale, get breastfeeding questions answered. No registration,

Healing Through Support
Support for parents recovering from miscarriage, stillbirth, or the loss
of a newborn. No registration, no fee. Call Health Link for details.
